Replaceface is more than just a goofy project that is about placing celebrities’ heads on what looks to be the bodies of decorated war generals. Replaceface is inherently confronting our perception of celebrity. Back in the day, the individuals that fought for our country were the celebrities, now we worship actors and technological wizards–then again, that could all be pretentious rubbish. Relpaceface probably figured that Ricky Gervais would look overwhelmingly fierce as a general.

The paintings are actually created using works by George Dawe, an English portrait artist who painted 329 portraits of Russian generals active during Napoleon’s invasion of Russia for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
