Subodh Gupta’s mixed media piece, What Does the Vessel Contain, That the River Does Not, is an obvious take on human misconception. Inspired by the work of the 13th century Persian poet, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, Gupta’s piece poetically chastises the need of people to acquire physical materials, a need that is often detrimental to spiritual well-being. Many people tend to place material possessions over everything else, as if they could carry it all with them.
