NYCxDESIGN at Design Pavilion

It’s not everyday that visitors to NYCxDESIGN get to perform on a public stage, but this year brings an exciting new initiative to guests visiting the Design Pavilion (Times Square pedestrian plazas between Broadway and 7th Avenue, from West 42nd to West 47th Streets) through May 22nd. Designed by the industrial design students and faculty from both Pratt Institute and The Strzeminski Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, D.C.,this project invites participants to engage in fun choreography referencing Polish dance circles. Visitors who dare to approach this interactive art experience and perform are rewarded with another fun element: a song! This installation, “Hurrah!”,marks a collaborative effort between participant and sculpture that mirrors the 100th anniversary of US-Polish diplomatic relations. As a result, the sculpture plays the well-known celebratory Polish song – “Sto Lat” – an upbeat, engaging tune celebrating participation and cooperation.

It’s not everyday that students at top universities from two countries come together to create engaging, participatory artworks! We sat down with Polish Cultural Institute of New York Director Anna Domanska to learn more about the makings of this whimsical, yet highly technical, public installation. “The idea of the installation arose from reflections on how we could celebrate the 100th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the USA and Poland in a way that would be interesting and inspiring today. We wanted to talk about the union of Poles and Americans, not by reviving history, but by establishing a new space for people from both countries to create together.” “Hurrah!” is placed in the center of the Design Festival’s Design Pavilion, where NYCxDESIGN attendees can experience cutting edge immersive and interactive experiences, and manages to stand out from the pack for its ability to inspire joy and celebration.

Make sure not to miss this engaging, interactive experience – up only through May 22, 2019!
