We spend a majority of our life being defined. Ben Cuevas‘ new work, Duality #1: Masculine/Feminine, addresses the issue of gender identity. Two mannequins–one male, the other female–are conjoined by a knitted garment decorated with “phallic and vulvic motifs”. The knitted garment, and its patches, represents gender traits and characteristics. Altogether, Duality #1 is a shrine dedicated to gender complexity.

Now on exhibition in Los Angeles at Knit Culture Studio, be sure to stop and see it for yourself.

Duality #1 can be seen as a visual model of how gender expression and identity function in relation to one another. Notions of an ideal male, wholly masculine, or of an ideal female, wholly feminine, are as unrealistic as the mannequins used for this piece.”
