Nightmares aren’t always terrifying. Sometimes they can be very compelling. João Ruas‘ work is something like a bad dream but its details sing a surreal lullaby that dissipates any apprehensions or fears and cradles its audience into a deep sleep.
The images in the work come off as ritualistic. Like they were spawned from some lost tribe that existed in future’s past. While there is some familiarity in Ruas’ aesthetic, he throws you off by implementing patterns, abrupt black bars and broken images.
