Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA –”a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles”– opens this evening at the Getty Museum. Quiet Lunch, however, will be hangin’ with some of the most notorious LA artists in that city’s Chinatown for this evening’s opening of CALIFORNIA LOCOS: SOCAL ORIGINALS – MASTERS OF STYLE at Eastern Projects Gallery. This group exhibition of contemporary and legendary SoCal artists is rooted in the diverse subcultures of Surf, Skate, Graffiti, Low-Brow, Tattoo, Hot Rod, Lowrider and Music and is curated by the legendary Chaz Bojórquez. “CALIFORNIA LOCOS: SoCal Originals – Masters of Style” exhibits their continued contributions to the West Coast culture. Always creating and growing, the CALIFORNIA LOCOS have expanded their core membership to include contemporary and legendary artists for this show.
Added to the original LOCOS core of Chaz Bojórquez, Dave Tourjé, John Van Hamersveld, Norton Wisdom and Gary Wong are Mister Cartoon, Shepard Fairey, Estevan Oriol, RETNA, SLICK and Robert Williams. Every art scene is led by an originator, a style master of his art and trade. These Masters are honored in this show for their life dedication as “true” creators, real pioneers that are now internationally recognized for their work.
The CALIFORNIA LOCOS have evolved into a movement which reflects the multi-cultural fabric of Southern California and it’s innovative subcultures that have resonated worldwide. In true LOCOS style, opening night will feature a Lowrider by Mister Cartoon, Hot Rod by Dave Tourjé and a new Dusters California x CALIFORNIA LOCOS skateboard release, led by Dusters Creative Director Nano Nobrega. A panel discussion with the artists and guests, moderated by Chaz Bojórquez, will be open to the public during the exhibition.
