Furious light hums from Bob Krasner‘s vibrant photography. Fuchsias, cyans, lemon and lime light, all cut between buildings as if done perfectly with scissors. The effect is rather abstract at first, like a collage mired in the deliberation of composition. But as you stare longer, and lean in just enough, the cityscapes emerge and begin to reveal themselves. All of this is on full display at his solo exhibition simply titled, Times Square, at Ki Smith Gallery.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Bob Krasner is a New York City-based photographer known for his daily images that capture the minimalist wonder of urban life. Spanning a decade and more, his work has offered a unique perspective on the metropolis’ architecture and brief moments of stillness.

Krasner’s had this to say about his latest exhibition at KiSmith Gallery at 170 Forsyth St:
“While my images of Times Square billboards represent a natural progression from the minimal city views that I have been working on for years, they are more specific and focused. Besides the fact that they are all created in a fixed location, they are the result of looking at one of the most visually overloaded places in the world and finding quiet, serene images amidst all the noise. As far as I can tell, they are views of Times Square that have not been seen before.”
– Bob Krasner

This show is a vibrant but dynamically tender siren song to all New Yorkers in love with their city, and the transplants equally enchanted by its call.
